The Strategy - Bryncynon, a community in action

Education and Training

Overview

We have recently been successful in accessing a grant from Objective 1 European Social Fund which will enable us to further develop the skills and expertise of our staff, directors and volunteers. This work will help us to continue to build the capacity of the organisation and community.

The aim of the programme is to raise confidence, broaden horizons and increase employability by offering a diverse learning programme based on assessed needs.

  • Achievements during the year
  • 220 students have been involved in a wide variety of accredited vocational and non vocational courses.
  • We continue to be a partner in the development of the Community University of the Valleys in addition to working with a wide range of local education providers.
  • We are participating in the Connecting Communities Cymru Project which has enabled us to upgrade our IT suite. We are now connected to the University of Swansea and can access resources via the net. In the longer term we hope to deliver a higher education curriculum through the internet as well as video conferencing.
  • We have been awarded the All Wales Quality Guidance Standards for our Adult Guidance Service.
  • We provide training placements for work experience and Social Work placements.
  • Within BCRS all teams have developed action plans and priorities for the next year.
  • Regular team and Directors meetings are held on a bi-monthly basis and full team meetings on a quarterly basis. All staff receive regular supervision sessions with their line managers.
  • Yearly Vision Days are held and are attended by staff, directors and volunteers.
  • 32 staff, directors and volunteers have undertaken training over the year.
  • 200 local people have received career Advice & Guidance.
  • Gained the Investor In People Award in October 2002.

Future Developments

We have applied to the Community Fund for an additional year's funding so that we can develop our work by providing a more diverse range of learning opportunities and experiences. This would enable us to reach the most excluded members in our community.

"Bryncynon Strategy is leading the way in ensuring appropriate and innovative learning opportunities are available in our local communities. Working with universities and community learning organisations across South Wales, the Strategy is a key player in regional partnership focused on bringing learning closer to home and making it more relevant to all parts of the community"
